Improving Item and Assessment Reliability Through Expanded Reporting Tools

Improving Item and Assessment Reliability Through Expanded Reporting Tools

High-stakes exams like the NCLEX and other test preparation assessments require more than just a snapshot of scores: they demand deep insights into question quality, assessment reliability, and learner performance trends. Our latest updates to the Question Stats, Responses, and Summary reports are built with this in mind, giving instructors and administrators the tools they need to make data-driven decisions about content with confidence.

Understand Metrics at a Glance

To support faster, more accurate interpretation of results, we’ve added tooltips across all columns in the Question Stats and Responses reports. With a simple hover, educators can instantly understand key psychometric indicators like Discrimination Index, Point Biserial, and Average Score, metrics that are particularly useful when evaluating item quality in exams modeled on standardized formats like the NCLEX.

Customize the View for What Matters Most

The Responses report now includes a streamlined filter menu that lets users personalize the table view by toggling columns on or off, including advanced metrics. Filters like Group/Individual mode have also been consolidated into this menu, making it easier to focus on student-level or cohort-level patterns. As filters are applied, the data updates immediately, eliminating the need for page reloads or additional clicks.

Redesigned Summary Report for Higher-Level Insights

To better support instructors and coordinators reviewing overall assessment performance, the Summary report now features a top-level header that consolidates core assessment statistics. Interactive status indicators remain in place and are now even more prominent, with related stats like mean scores now positioned above the histogram. Pagination has been introduced to make large data sets easier to browse.

The report also introduces Cronbach’s Alpha, a gold standard measure of internal consistency. For test prep environments where question reliability is paramount, this metric provides a clear indication of whether your assessment is functioning as intended.

Deeper, More Flexible Question Analysis

The Question Stats report has received a significant expansion. In addition to new metrics such as average score, discrimination index, and response frequencies, multi-part questions are now grouped together, reflecting the structure of complex, scenario-based questions like those used in NCLEX exams. Clicking a question stem reveals detailed student responses, and a built-in search bar makes it easier to locate specific items. Reports can now be downloaded as CSV files, streamlining analysis and review processes for instructional teams and assessment committees.

Coming Soon: Global Question Performance History

Launching this summer, we’re introducing a new view into question performance history. From the Question Stats report, admins will be able to access longitudinal performance data for any question, across all its uses, in any assessment, anywhere in the institution. This feature will support ongoing item validation and help ensure consistency and fairness in high-stakes and practice exams alike.

Whether you're building practice tests or administering formal assessments, these reporting updates are designed to provide you with the clarity and flexibility you need to deliver meaningful and measurable learning outcomes.
