Dynamic Registration: LTI Tool Setup Simplified
If you’ve ever been asked to install an LTI Tool into your Learning Management System (LMS), your first reaction is probably one of dread, and your second is a scramble to find an hour on your calendar. The process was time-consuming with LTI 1.1. LTI 1.3 made sure to increase the pain and time required to get things working.
The LTI working group recognized the problem, and along came dynamic registration. The specification isn’t new. It’s been around since October 2020. It has been hanging out in the IMS Candidate Final state for a while. Brightspace, Blackboard, Moodle, and Sakai were quick to add it. Canvas took a little longer, but finished up its implementation late in Spring 2024.
Now that all the major LMSs have joined the party, it’s in every LTI tool's interest to join the party and implement dynamic registration. Why is this specification such a game-changer?
- Reduce the amount of time spent with customers installing tools. This saves money because your customer success team won’t be tied up on Zoom calls, and it saves your customers a great deal of frustration, confusion, and time.
- Ensure accurate installs every time. I’ve been on many installs where the customer accidentally missed copying a few characters in a URL or an email client encoded some quotation marks, making JSON invalid. Dynamic registration reduced the touch points to eliminate these problems.
- There will be interesting upcoming partnership opportunities. Instructure announced its new EdCo Partner Program. They’ve had the eduApp store for a long time. I’ve heard rumors of a new app store entirely built around dynamic registration. Other LMS companies will surely follow.
- Simplifying the installation of an LTI tool means vendors can spend more of their upfront time on customer success and training rather than on getting the tool into the LMS.
